Here’s why an SSD is better than an HDD in almost every way:
- SSDs have no parts that move like traditional hard drives.
- They consume less power than conventional hard drives, emit less heat and do not vibrate.
- They are three to four times faster at read and sequential writes.
- SSDs have super fast random access times. The random access time measures the time it takes for a disk to access a random bit data. A hard drive is physically moving a magnetic head to a specific part of the rotating disk to read the data. It takes about 17ms on a fast HDD. On an SSD on the other hand, it can take less than 0.1 ms.
The type of SSD you own is important but not as having any decent SSDs compared to a standard hard disk. Most people will never notice the difference between a high-end SSD and a standard SSD, but you will clearly see the difference between an SSD and a mechanical drive.
If you have a computer with a standard HDD, this is the slowest part of your system. The rest of the computer must wait for information to be read or written to the hard disk.

The price gap is unusually small because people keep more data in the cloud and less on their computers. A basic SSD cost 3 euros per GB in 2010 and 1 euro per GB in 2012. Today, in 2016, you can have a good SSD for less than 40 cents per GB.
WHO SHOULD HAVE AN SSD?
You can have an SSD like the Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB if you have a computer that is three years old and has a standard or above HDD. But this just applies if plan to keep your computer at least another year or you want to put your SSD in your new computer. It isn’t logic to improve a computer that you will replace.
If your computer has an SSD, the only reason to have another SSD is if you haven’t more space in the first. You will never notice a difference in speed unless you want to write daily to your hard drive a huge file. The SSD in my desktop has more than three years old, and the only time I notice any lag is when I access something on the mechanical hard drive.
You should also improve your RAM if your computer has 4GB or less. 8 GB of RAM can make a huge difference in everyday use; 16 GB is too much for most people.
The desktop SSD market is moving to the SATA PCIe, but you still have SATA ports on new computers. For laptops, look at the website of your manufacturer or use Crucial’s upgrade advisor tools to understand what type of hard drive your laptop can handle and if you can replace it. Nowadays, especially ultrabooks, use the mSATA or M. 2 standards (see below). The Samsung 850 EVO is 2.5 inch SATA, mSATA and M. 2, so there is probably one that will suit to your computer.
What capacity should I take?
First, you should think about your needs. If you want your computer to boot faster, I recommend a small capacity of 120GB. For users who also want to put some games, will need a size of 250GB.
The discs with larger capacities tend to be faster. In fact, a big part of the speed of an SSD comes from parallelization. As AnandTech said, “A single NAND chip is not very fast, but when you put a dozen or more in parallel, performance is added.”
